It’s not you it’s them

Why is it sew….

Being a sewist – (n) A sewist is a person who sews, especially as a hobby.

Being a dressmaker – (n) A dressmaker is a person who makes women’s or children’s clothes.

Being a seamstress – (n) A seamstress is a woman who sews and makes clothes as her job. A good tip, is to find a good seamstress who can do alterations.

Being a Tailor – (n) A tailor is a person whose job it is to make men’s clothes

Being a Tailoress – (n) A female tailor

Whatever ‘title’ you put yourself into…. it is a skill to make clothing to fit all types, shapes and sizes. And with the technology and ability to google everything nower days the end results are not as hard to achieve.

However, in saying that, I am not going to diminish the training and skills I have learnt over the past 30+ years of me sewing.

All be it, some were only formed as recently as in the past 10 years, but like driving, some come with practice, observation and time.

After all it was time that taught me that not all bodies are built the same, and that when one body part expands or deflates, it doesn’t mean all body parts do….

For example, if your full breast size gets larger, it doesn’t mean your shoulders or your back does, and same goes for your hips.

So it seems so arbitrary the way they make their patterns, for us to be ‘sewists’ at home to fit our bodies without alterations. I can understand the frustration that would definitely be present if certain skills, knowledge and practice don’t help you fit your patterns to your body, or of someone you might be making clothes for.
